Ingredients to make oatmeal raisin cookies

Dry ingredients:

  • All-purpose flour: This forms the base of the dough and gives the cookies structure.
  • Rolled oats: These add a chewy texture and nutty flavor. You can use old-fashioned oats for the chewiest texture, or quick oats for a slightly softer cookie.
  • Baking soda and baking powder: These leavening agents help the cookies rise and become fluffy.
  • Salt: It enhances the sweetness of the raisins and other flavors.
  • Spices: Cinnamon is the classic choice, but you can also add other warm spices like nutmeg, ginger, or cloves for a more intense flavor.

Wet ingredients:

  • Butter or vegan butter substitute: This adds moisture and richness to the dough. Make sure it’s at room temperature and softened before creaming it with the sugars.
  • Sugars: Brown sugar and white sugar are typically used. Brown sugar adds a deeper molasses flavor and helps keep the cookies moist, while white sugar adds sweetness and promotes spreading.
  • Eggs or egg replacer: These bind the ingredients together and add moisture. Use Flax egg as a replacer. Combine 1 tablespoon of Flax meal with 2 tablespoons of water.
  • Vanilla extract: This adds a touch of sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • Raisins: These are the classic addition, but you can use other dried fruits like cranberries, cherries, or apricots.

Optional additions:

  • Nuts: Chopped walnuts, pecans, or almonds add a nice crunch and nutty flavor.
  • Chocolate chips: For a decadent twist, you can add some chocolate chips or chunks to the dough.
  • Spices : You can experiment with other spices like cardamom, allspice, or even a pinch of cayenne pepper for a kick.

How to make Oatmeal Raisin Cookies?

This recipe is divided into three simple steps: prep, mix, and bake. So, grab your whisk, your spatula, and your measuring tools – we’re in for a delightful baking adventure.

We’ll be using a kitchen scale for ultimate precision, ensuring perfect texture and flavor in every bite. But for those without a scale, I’ve also included cup measurements to make sure everyone can join the cookie baking fun. Let’s first bring the butter to room temperature. Leave it on the counter for 30 mins or so to soften up.

Preheat the Oven to 356 degree F or 180 degree C. Line a Cookie tray or baking tray with parchment paper.

Grab a mixing bowl and add softened butter and whisk for a minute or two till light and fluffy using a hand held mixer or stand mixer. You can also whip the butter with hand but it’s take a few extra minutes and some muscle power.

Next add both the sugars, flax egg, vanilla and whisk for 2 more minutes till the sugars are combined well with the fats.

It’s time to add the dry ingredients now. Combine flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon powder, salt to the sugar and butter mixture. Gently fold the dry ingredients with a spatula. When combined, finally add the star ingredients rolled oats and raisins.

Give a final good mix for the cookie dough to form. Using a medium-sized ice cream scoop to portion out the dough into balls. Release portions of dough onto your parchment-lined baking sheet. Don’t press down on the dough; let it keep its rounded shape. Leave approximately 2 inches of space between each scoop to allow for spreading during baking. Aim for the cookie balls to be taller and not wide.

Add a few raisins on the top of the cookie balls. Bake for 12- 15 mins. Remember, every oven is different, so keep an eye on those beauties around the 12-minute mark. If they’re golden brown and slightly firm around the edges, they’re good to go! But if they still look pale, give them a couple more minutes until they reach that perfect cookie perfection.

Let these golden beauties cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. This gives them time to set up and prevents them from crumbling when you transfer them to the cooling rack. The cookies comes out of the oven so perfect in shape and size. If they spread out more by any chance( which didn’t happen to me luckily) use a large cookie ring and smooth out the edges in circular motion when they are straight out of the oven.
